Ebooks are not killing Libraries

You might think that the advent of ebook readers like the Kindle and the NOOK might spell the end of libraries as we know them. Au contraire!

Ebook checkouts increased by more than 200% in 2010, according to a recent study from OverDrive, the leading distributor of ebooks and digital audiobooks to libraries.

Ebook checkouts continue to accelerate, almost tripling through September. This adds to the more than 12 million ebook checkouts so far in 2011, paidContent reports.

More than two-thirds of public libraries in the U.S. now offer ebook checkouts, more than 15,000 of which use OverDrive’s platform. That includes heavy hitters like the New York Public Library.

NOOK Raffle Winner!

With the washout of the Railroad Days book sale, the drawing for the NOOK Color was postponed until October 5.

The new Branch Administrator of the Brunswick Library, Michael Carlson (ably assisted by Mary Minnis) drew the winning ticket.

Our lucky winner was Carol Crow from Birmingham, Alabama. Congratulations, Carol!

We would like to thank all who made our raffle a success. We raised over $360 which we’ll use to help with programs at the Library.

Do you remember all of that rain we didn’t get in July?

Well, apparently Mother Nature decided to give it back to us all at once.

We gave it the old college try, but piles of books and torrential downpours do not mix. While we tried to save as much as we could, we ended up having to throw away three 64-gallon containers of sodden books.

Our biggest (and, until recently, only) fundraiser of the year was a total washout.

We are working on having an indoor book sale at the Library in November. Watch this space for details.
